Project One

Social Construct Company

2021

Social Construct was a startup founded on the premise that reducing labor time on construction sites is the key to controlling project cost and timeline. To that end, we developed a series of prefab product families and associated install processes that would significantly reduce the interior finishing time of multifamily residential projects, and installed them in a 16,000 sqft residential new build in Oakland canned Project One. My primary responsibilities at the company were as follows:

  • Design concept and prototyping - I worked closely with the architecture and engineering teams to design, prototype, and test a suite of proprietary pre-fab construction components such as raised floor panels, door jambs with integrated lighting, kitchen casework, bathroom tub surrounds, and more. In addition to the product needing to serve aesthetic and functional purpose for the tenants, my primary design brief was to maximize install speed while reducing downtime on the jobsite.

  • Operations - To support the install of thousands od our pefab components, I worked with our logistics team to develop tools to manage logistics, gather time tracking data, and coordinate hundreds of unique processes on the construction site. All installers used an app to track their progress, report issues, and fins installation instructions.

  • Site Management - I served as site foreman on the jobsite during the installation of our components. Over 2 weeks with a team of 6 installers, I oversaw the installation of thousands of our prefab components in 9 apartments in the building. The modular design of the components allowed our team to stay flexible in the event of an unforeseen problem, allowing our team to experience near-zero downtime over the course of the installation.
