Mod Blocks

School project, CCA

2017

Modular systems are inherently useful - each component piece can be manipulated or interchanged to create new forms, and oftentimes new functions. When applied to a piece of furniture, this concept allows for a dynamic interaction between user and object, and redefines the way we think about our engagemennt with the built environmennt.

I devised this system of "Mod Blocks" that link together using basic joinery to form rigid structures. By changing the position of the interlocking modules, the set can be changed into forms that work as tables, chairs, stools, benches, and many other types of furniture objects.

Each of the 20 blocks is unique: the position and angle of the connection point between the four legs varies slightly from piece to piece, allowing an almost infinite potential for block forms and combinations. Each piece was modeled in CAD, and then hand made from poplar.
